Our Story: Why I Created the Cultural Compass™ and What Makes This Tool Different
I’ve had the honour and privilege of working with people who carry many layers of identity - those who live between cultures, straddle expectations, and often feel like they’re piecing together a sense of self from different worlds.
Again and again, I noticed something missing. Both as someone from the therapist chair, but also as a client seeking help. Many reflective tools out there even the well-intentioned ones, are often built from a singular cultural lens. They rarely reflect the experiences, values or even the symbols that feel familiar or relevant to those of us from multicultural, migrant or diaspora communities. The nuance gets lost. Our stories end up feeling like the exception rather than the starting point.
I created the Cultural Compass™ because I couldn’t find a psychology based tool that spoke to the stories and values many from bicultural or multicultural experiences carry. Not just for my clients, but also for myself, my family, friends and communities.
It’s not a perfect tool, but it’s a heartfelt one that invites you to reflect on your values - not in isolation, but within the real-life intersections of family, culture, identity and belonging. It’s here to support you. And if you’re a therapist, coach, or leader, it’s here to support the people you walk alongside.
Whether you’re trying to figure out what matters most, navigate cultural tensions, or make peace with how to honour where you come from while still choosing your own way forward; this deck was created to centre our stories, not sideline them.
“For those of us who move between worlds, clarity is hard to come by. The Cultural Compass offers a way to name what matters, honouring every part of you.”
— Vi Tran, Clinical Psychologist & Founder

We all move through different worlds whether that be personal, cultural, professional. Sometimes, those worlds conflict.
The Cultural Compass is a first-of-its-kind reflective tool for:
→ Clarifying your values through a culturally informed lens with cards reflecting both collectivist and individualist values, recognising that what matters to us is shaped by many cultural influences not just one.
→ Navigating intersections of identity and belonging with care
→ Facilitating deeper conversations across differences
Grounded in Cultural Psychology and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), the deck helps you name what matters even in the grey areas of culture, family and self.
-
→ Individuals reflecting on identity, culture and belonging in everyday life
→ Therapists, psychologists & coaches supporting values-based work and cultural identity exploration
→ Educators, DEI facilitators & cultural competency trainers seeking meaningful tools for inclusive dialogue
→ Families, partners, communities and intergenerational storytellers looking to bridge generational gap
→ For anyone who’s ever wondered: What matters to me? Can I honour where I come from and still choose my own direction? What does belonging mean to me across different spaces and identities.
-
You will receive access to a 20+ guide and handbook with different activities which helps:
